Four (4) reasons why video surveillance installations fail

December 18, 2023

Video surveillance systems are a valuable tool for security and crime prevention, but they usually fail because of these 4 main reasons reasons.

1. Poor Planning and Design

  •   Inadequate coverage: Not enough cameras or poorly positioned cameras can leave blind spots where people or activities can go undetected

  • Incorrect camera type: Using the wrong type of camera for the application can result in poor image quality or a lack of necessary features, such as night vision or motion detection.

  • Insufficient storage: Not having enough storage space to save recorded footage can lead to overwriting or lost data.

2. Technical issues

  • Power problems: Power outages or surges can damage cameras or recording equipment.
  • Network connectivity issues: Video surveillance systems often rely on a network connection to transmit data. If the network is unstable or unreliable, the system can fail to record or transmit footage.
  • Hardware failures: Cameras, recording equipment, and other hardware components can fail over time.
  • Software bugs: Software bugs can cause a variety of problems, such as video loss, corrupted footage, or system crashes.

3. Human Error

  • Improper installation: Cameras that are not installed correctly can be easily damaged or malfunction.
  • Lack of maintenance: Regular maintenance is important to keep a video surveillance system in good working order. This includes cleaning cameras, checking connections, and updating software.
  • User error: Users may accidentally delete footage, change settings, or otherwise interfere with the system's operation.

4. Other factors

  • Physical damage: Cameras can be damaged by vandals, weather, or accidents.
  • Cybersecurity attacks: Hackers can gain access to video surveillance systems and steal or manipulate footage.
  • Privacy concerns: Some people may object to being monitored by video surveillance.

By understanding the common reasons why video surveillance installations fail, you can take steps to prevent problems and ensure that your system is working properly.
